Street Art

It’s said a picture can paint a thousand words and the interpretive art found around the streets of Gore certainly is testament to that. Murals and street art delightfully combine to tell the history, and stories of Gore in an artistic way.

Locals and visitors alike can delve into the topics behind the eight murals that create the Gore Street Art Trail through Gore’s central business district. Starting at the Gore Visitor Centre, follow the trail from the beginning or mix it up and let your heart lead your feet. Grab a map from the visitor centre and enjoy the storytelling of each mural.

Spot some of Gore’s icons intertwined with reflections of its flora and fauna, the history of both settlers and mana whenua of the area and more, all wrapped up in stunning artistry. Learn about the locally and nationally acclaimed mural artists who created each of these pieces of art.

Take a stroll, take in the art and explore the stories of Gore without words. The Gore Street Art Trail is worth your time.

Here are some examples of the amazing work you will find on the trail:

Sean Duffell – Tower Lane

Sean originally hails from Gore.

A prolific street artist, he creates abstract murals often based on native flora and fauna. His artwork can be found in more large cities around New Zealand covering walls and roller doors.

A full-time artist since 2003, Sean’s mural was inspired by the visuals surrounding the skateboarding culture of his youth.

Charles and Janine Williams – Resene, Medway Street

For Charles (Ngāti Kahungunu, Ngāi Tūhoe, Ngāpuhi) and Janine (Lady Diva), whanau and hapori (community) are integral parts of their full-time artistic journey.

Charles is a founding member and president of the world championship winning crew TMD (The Most Dedicated), a collective of creatives from around the world who continue to push boundaries.

Janine is one of Aotearoa’s first female street artists. She has spent the past 20 years developing community art activations and corporate engagement projects.

Deow – Gore Racing Club, Irk Street

Deow’s works consist mostly of aerosol paint and his art portrays figurative characters and portraits, merged with the fundamental elements of his graffiti style art.

Deow has created a number of works in the south in recent years.
