It’s no accident there’s a giant trout statue in the middle of Gore. We’re known as the Brown Trout Capital of the World.
International fishermen know when the Northern Hemisphere Winter hits, Gore is the place to be to spend months fishing on our Mataura River. Access to the river is easy, fish are plentiful and the water is often described as “gin-clear”.
The Mataura has the highest brown trout population and catch rates of any New Zealand river. It’s famous for its mayfly hatches and spinner falls and has the best match the hatch fishing.
Head to the river with a local fishing guide or rent gear from a local sports shop and head to the river on foot. It’s that easy!
After a spell at the river, follow up with a visit to the Gore Museum, where there is a collection of fishing memorabilia dating to the 1870s.
