Hokonui Moonshiners' Festival

Held every two years, the festival is a celebration of a unique part of Southland’s history - the moonshine legend.

The festival is held in Gore during February. It commemorates the illegal distilling of liquor in the Hokonui Hills in the first half of the 20th century, when the Gore District was ‘dry’.

Live entertainment, great food, craft beer & cider, Central Otago wines and Old Hokonui Whiskey - the festivities are held rain or shine. This is a licensed event - no BYO food or drink.

The Hokonui Moonshine Museum is entering an exciting new phase with a $1.9 million redevelopment currently in progress – so our traditional festival event is on hold.

With the precinct being a construction site for the rest of 2020 and the first half of 2021, we are focusing on a range of smaller events, with the prospect of doing something very special to celebrate the launch of our new museum.
