Southland 2010 Photographs by Andrew Ross at the Eastern Southland Gallery

Jun. 18 - Jul. 24, 2011

Eastern Southland Gallery

Exhibition Opening:  Saturday 18 June 5pm

Exhibition:  19 June to 24 July 2011

Andrew Ross is a Wellington based photographer who lived in Southland in 2010. This exhibition shares Andrew’s exploration of the province, his view of our landscapes, buildings and a few of people he met along the way.  Andrew’s work invites us to sift through the past and present; the reward being a view well beyond the moment of the image’s capture. His portraits intuitively convey a person’s wairua (spirit), referencing their objects and

sense of place.

Originally from Masterton, Andrew moved to Wellington to study at Victoria University, graduating with a BA in History. After work as a dark room technician, he started using large format equipment in 1996 and since then has built up a significant body of work, mainly using a 1920’s, 8 x 10”camera. Andrew hand-develops his negatives. Each print involves hours of darkroom work, accordingly each one is unique.

Andrew is best known for his images of Wellington but as this exhibition shows, it is a mistake to define his work by reference to just one place.  Andrew strenuously avoids self-promotion but his work demands attention.

Photospace (a Wellington gallery specialising in contemporary NZ photography) represents Andrew and has regularly exhibited his work since 1998. In 2008, Victoria University Press and Photospace jointly published a book of his photographs entitled ‘Fiat Lux’, (Let there be light).  Over the past year, the Sarjeant Gallery in Whanganui and Wellington’s City Gallery have hosted solo exhibitions of Andrew’s photographs.
