Education

The Gore district is well serviced by a vibrant education sector. Within the area there are a total of 11 primary schools, one intermediate school and two secondary schools that service the compulsory education sector. There is also a range of early childhood educational options from kindergartens to play centres and rural playgroups. The area also has a satellite campus of the Southern Institute of Technology which offers a variety of programmes designed to provide wider employment opportunities.

Gore High School which is one of the two secondary schools, was founded in 1908 and is a year 9-13 co-educational, multi-course school. St Peters College is a catholic co-educational year 7-13 school also situated within the Gore township. Both schools offer boarding facilities and offer tuition for international students.

Longford Intermediate is now the only intermediate school in Southland and offers an intermediate schooling option in the Eastern Southland area. The primary schools of the area range from West Gore School, the largest primary school in Eastern Southland to several small one and two teacher schools such as Otama School situated on the outskirts of Gore in a rural area.

There are two public libraries in the Gore District providing services including Internet facilities and toy libraries. The Southern Institute of Technology (SIT) is located in Invercargill and offers a huge array of zero fee courses. Gore has a SIT feeder campus which runs many of the same zero fee courses providing the opportunity to upskill and potentially leading to better employment options in the future.
