Brown Trout Fishing

The Mataura River in Gore is famous for the quality of its brown trout fishing. That’s why Gore is known as the “Brown Trout Capital of the World”.

With easy public access, plentiful fish and water so clear it is often described as ‘gin-clear’, the Mataura Valley is a ‘dry-fly Mecca’. From October through to March anglers flock to the Gore District from around the world. See it here on our promotional video

The Mataura has the highest brown trout population and catch rates of any New Zealand river. It’s famous for its mayfly hatches and spinner falls, and has the best ‘match the hatch’ fishing.

Head to the river with a  local fishing guide or rent gear from a local sports shop and head to the river on foot. It's that easy.

After a spell at the river, follow up with a visit to the Gore Historical Museum which hosts a collection of fishing memorabilia dating to the 1870s.

And don’t leave Gore without a photo at our famous trout statue.
